I'm struggling with feeling fulfilled and having purpose in my full time job.
Q: "Hey @thadcoxdesign I'm struggling with feeling fulfilled and having purpose in my full time job. Do you think it's important to feel like you're adding something worthwhile all the time to visual communication in your everyday job or do you suggest channeling more energy into self driven pursuits?"
@thadcoxdesign: 100%. Life's to short to waste it working somewhere you hate. The key is to figure out why you're unfulfilled? Is the the agency or the industry? If you moved agencies, would this fix your problem? If not then it's about planning to transition into a career that excites you.
It's not always easy to feel like you are adding something worthwhile whilst working in an agency because there are so many variables and contradicting opinions out of your control. You are working for someone else and so you have to do what is required and try to add value whenever you can. If this is impossible or hard for you to do, then you may have to look at going solo.
To do that you will have to work hard and save your money during the day. Then research and work on your passion in the evening and at weekends. Gradually make the switch when you have amassed a large financial buffer. To succeed in your new pursuit you'll need both skills, hard work and money to allow you the time to find employment.
